Hail.... hmmmm
How do I know if I have hail or wind damage?
Sometimes we are sleeping and Hail comes, we have no idea unless the alarms went off.
Sometimes we are not home and we had no idea that our neighborhood was the host to damaging hail and winds.
Sometimes we are staring out the back slider door and wondering, how the heck is my roof doing? My car is not looking so hot.
Chances are your roof is made of Architectural, 3-Tab, Laminate, or T-Lok Asphalt shingles.
Damage is not always obvious right after a storm unless the hail was larger than1.5". Once the hail hits is packs the granules tight and as water, cold, heat, and freezing occur, then the damage is more obvious.
If you have hail damage, and you need to get started call for a roof inspection, a storm damage inspection. Most storm restoration companies provide a free storm inspection. This is the issue, are they from a recent area of 3" hail and holes in the roof, siding and broken windows? If so, they may spend 5 minutes looking and say, no damage here. They drive off in the sunset.
You need a full top, down roof inspection. This means from the ridge of your roof to the last panel on your garage door. They need to look for damage on the gutters, windows, siding, local area, the car in the driveway, not because they are looking for things to fix, its because they are looking to establish the extent of hail damage using collateral damage. This help understand the size, the direction of the hail and the extent of damage the home encountered.
Your Roof Inspection: They will show up and look over your entire property for any signs of hail damage. They will get on the roof and look and feel for depressions in the composite or laminate
Haag Publications Composition Roof Damage: This is an excellent reference source for understanding hail, however in the 100's of inspections I have been on I have never seen any reference to it.
Your Carriers Adjusters: They work for your carrier: Once you call in your claim, your carrier will dispatch an adjuster to evaluate your damage. If you have a storm damage roofer, its important to have them onsite during the evaluation. It will give you the greatest opportunity to state your case.
Independent Adjuster: He is a private contractor and in the state he is probably not licensed. He will look at your roof, then provide the carrier feedback with photos.
